Water Experience

I am a land and natural resources governance expert. I joined the academia in 2021, after more than 20 years working in post-conflict countries for several United Nations and international organisations in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific on human rights, natural resources governance, Indigenous People’s land rights and traditional governance. I am interested in how traditional governance of coastal communities can support adaptation to climate change and the role of women as well as their access to land and natural resources, including water. I also research the relationship between land, natural resources and traditional governance, and how this impacts on indigenous communities’ participation in decision-making on land and natural resources at local and global levels and the ability that women have to contribute to the decision making. I obtained a Laurea (LLM) in Law in 2000 and a PhD in Philosophy of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in 2004 from the University of Naples “Federico II”. I speak several languages and am now learning Te Reo and Tikanga Māori. https://www.otago.ac.nz/surveying/staff/dr-francesca-marzatico
