Water Experience

My expertise: Watershed hydrology, water quantity and quality, food production, virtual water trade. I am fascinated by the myriad of connections between our food and energy needs, including what we need to produce them – the water, the environment, the human resources, and everything else. My interests are understanding and modeling natural environmental processes quantitatively by applying programming tools and using big data to understand these complex issues. I like to focus on how human decisions such as water development projects, food production, and energy development, from local to global scales, impact an environment’s carrying capacity. Countries exceeding their land and water quantity and quality quickly reach tipping points that challenge their food and energy security. The socio-economic needs of the people are and will be significantly affected by climate change and their decisions. My research group and I address these challenges aiming to inform the public, policy makers, and managers by addressing the areas of risks and opportunities.
