Women In Water Day

October 24, 2024

University of Calgary and University of Saskatchewan

Our waterscapes are changing. From more intense and frequent floods, storms, droughts, and wildfires to changes in timing, types and amounts of precipitation, communities and economic sectors are looking for innovative solutions to build water and climate resilience. While solutions exist, these may not stand the test of future change and have not benefitted all people equitably. This opens up space for innovation – innovative technologies, innovative training, innovative and adaptive policies and programs, and innovative and inclusive governance systems.

Leadership diversity is a critical component of innovation. The economic and societal value of diversity has been well established. There are several global calls to action to increase diversity in all arenas including leadership, such as the youth 30x30x30 (30% under 30 representation by 2030) challenge, the Athena Swan Charter (and equivalents, including the Dimensions Charter in Canada), as well as more local and organization-based policies and programs. How do we manage and protect our vital water resources equitably and sustainably? What is the role of academia in preparing students to participate in a more diverse workforce both in terms of working within one and fostering one? How can we prepare students and equip them with skills to be members of diverse leadership teams? How do we support members of equity deserving groups, equipping them to become the leaders of tomorrow? These questions form the basis for a series of events on the 24th of October, 2024, hosted jointly by the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan in Calgary.
